The purpose of oil refining is generally to refine the oil after pressing (commonly known as crude oil). Impurities in crude oil not only affect the oil’s edible value and safe storage, but also complicate further processing, improving the oil’s value, and processing byproducts. Refining, however, does not necessarily remove all impurities from the oil, but rather removes those that are harmful to consumption, storage, and industrial use, such as gossypol, protein phospholipids, hydrocarbon waxes, aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and aflatoxins. Therefore, the purpose of refining is to remove unwanted and harmful impurities from the oil, depending on the requirements and application, to obtain a finished oil that meets certain quality standards.
